Dracula is inspired by Vlad the Impaler, a 15th-century prince of Wallachia (a historical and geographical region of Romania) renowned for his brutal execution methods. His legacy of terror earned him lasting infamy.
'Dracula' translates to 'son of Dracul,' a title for Vlad III's father, who was part of the Order of the Dragon, a noble order defending Christianity against the Ottomans.
Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, Dracula, is believed to be inspired by the Transylvanian local legends and myths and by Vlad the Impaler. This novel gave us the iconic vampire by blending folklore and fiction. Thus, vampire traits such as the adversity to sunlight and garlic were introduced and are still used today.
Bran Castle is often linked to Dracula, but despite its eerie atmosphere, Vlad the Impaler has no historical connection.
Vlad III’s nickname, 'the Impaler,' came from his preferred execution method - impaling enemies on stakes, a tactic designed to instill fear.
